Chronic pain affects 20% of general population worldwide. It is not just a symptom, but considered as a disease by itself regardless of its possible cause.

The objective of chronic pain management is to deal with chronic pain in a multidisciplinary team. The team may include a patient’s GP, specialists, physiotherapist, psychologist etc. The team will implement different physical, pharmacological, psychological modalities and procedures through a holistic and integrative approach.

Musculoskeletal pain is one source of chronic pain due to different causes. For example arthritis, tendon and ligamentous injuries and soft tissue damage or fibrosis.

Joint, tendon, ligament and muscle pain conditions can be alleviated or cured by ultrasound guided nerve blocks and injection of steroids. Other methods may include prolotherapy, and platelet rich plasma. Grove Health Pymble is honoured to have the state of the art device (TGA approved) that can provide the ultimate results.

PRP treatment

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are injections that can provide relief for arthritis of the knee i.e. osteoarthritis of the knee. This usually occurs from degeneration and ‘wear and tear’.

Other main joints that can also be treated with PRP injections include the sacroiliac joint (SIJ), hip joint, ankle joint and shoulder joint etc.

PRP treatment is very useful for chronic tendon injuries that result in hip pain. For example, the gluteus medius tendon, knee pain, such as that of the patellar tendon, achilles tendon, or elbow pain (tennis elbow).

Interestingly, certain types of wounds can also be treated with some forms of PRP preparation.

Following an initial consultation with our doctor, you may be required to do some further scans. This may include an ultrasound or an MRI to help confirm your diagnosis. The results will determine if PRP therapy is the most appropriate treatment for you.

PRP treatment will take around 30 minutes. Your own blood is used (15 to 30 mls) and prepared in a centrifuge machine. This process separates the platelet rich plasma (PRP) from the red cells and other blood components. With ultrasound guidance, the PRP will then be injected under sterile conditions into the appropriate location to best aid healing by your doctor.
