If so then it is possible your child could be suffering from one or more of the following; Candida Overgrowth, Digestive Dysfunction, Food Intolerances, Heavy Metal Toxicity, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Nutritional Deficiencies and Poor Dietary Choices.

20 years ago the incidence of Autism in Australia was 1 child in 10,000. In Australia today, 1 child in 125 is diagnosed with Autism. Genetics alone cannot cause an epidemic. A combination of genetic vulnerability and more importantly environmental factors is believed to be responsible for the massive increase in Autism and other childhood illnesses and/or issues.

There are many culminating factors involved in gut, immune and neurological disorders. Common environmental factors include significant rises in pollution, heavy metals, poor food choices, food contamination, medications and stress. All have a direct and detrimental effect on cellular health.

When looking into other factors that contribute to childhood illnesses and/or issues you generally find a family history of allergies, eczema, asthma, depression, schizophrenia, thrush, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory gut disorders and/or autoimmune diseases.

Previously considered to be a psychological condition, leading physicians have now found that Autistic children have many common underlying conditions involving the gut and immune systems. These have been shown to lead to the neurological symptoms of Autism and other Autistic Spectrum Disorder’s (ASD’s). The biomedical approach addresses these underlying factors.

There are five key principals to the biomedical approach to Childhood Health. They are:

  • Dietary Intervention
  • Digestive Tract Healing
  • Nutritional Medicine
  • Detoxification
  • Neuro-Developmental And Behavioural Therapies

Medications may also be necessary for some children. However working with diet offers a multi-layered approach to the treatment of ASD, ADHD as well as other childhood illnesses and/or issues. It also builds the very important foundations on which medical treatment can be given in a safer, more effective manner.

The aim of dietary intervention is to help correct nutritional imbalances, resolve gut dysbiosis and heal the gut wall, enabling its function of digestion, absorption and elimination to work effectively. By doing this the immune system is strengthened, resulting in fewer infections and an improved ability for the body to detoxify itself. Neurotransmitters which affect behaviours, concentration, mood, sleep and addictions are also balanced by resolving the nutritional deficiencies that create an imbalance of these critical brain chemicals.

It is important that dietary modification be done concurrently with nutritional medicine, gut repair and detoxification for optimal results. Several diets have been shown to be beneficial for many children with Autism, ASD, AD/HD and other associated disorders. Each child is different, so there is not a “one size fits all” approach. Different children do better on different diets, and some children need a combination of diets.

The most common diets used are:

  • Blood Type Diet
  • Body Ecology Diet (BED)
  • Failsafe Diet
  • Gluten Free And Casein Free (GF/CF)
  • Gut And Psychology Syndrome Diet (GAPS)
  • Low Allergy Diet
  • Low Oxalate Diet
  • Nourishing Traditions
  • Palaeolithic Diet
  • Phenol / Salicylate Free Diet
  • Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
  • Yeast Free / Anti-Candida Diet
